 Experience
I was hired by Loews Corp. to enter their computer programmer training program. This was my first full-time job in the computing profession. The training program was for programming in COBOL and although COBOL was a dying programming language, I accepted the job because I understood that getting experience was more important. I needed to get that first job and Loews was a very good company. I completed the training program much quicker then it was intended and received an early promotion.
As my one year anniversary with the company approached, I was called by a recruiter at AT&T; they wanted to know if I was interested in a position that would allow me to program using Oracle, Unix and C. Although I really liked working at Loews (the company and the people), I felt at the time that the AT&T offer was better in the long run due to the training I would receive. Therefore, I decided to leave Loews and enter AT&T's Initial Designer Program (IDT-C).
Sincerely,

Working at Loews gave me great exposure to working in a corporate environment, especially a well known conglomerate like Loews.
Working in the corporate function allowed me to work (develop programs/reports, etc) with the various subsidiaries, such as CNA Financial, Lorillard, etc. I wrote programs and reports relating to accounting, taxes, human resources and financial investing (using COBOL, JCL and CICS).
I developed a system we named the Loews Ticket Capture system. This was essentially an information reporting system for the institutional investors at Loews. The system provided read only views of investing transactions by the company's traders. The software used to develop the system was a product called Forest & Trees (by Computer Associates).
I was also fortunate enough to have had some good mentors while at Loews. I respected the people I worked with and I was very happy that I decided to pursue the opportunity that Loews provided.
